DRESSING UP MY WILD THING – HALLOWEEN OWL COSTUME

DRESSING UP MY WILD THING – HALLOWEEN OWL COSTUME
My husband and I are huge Harry Potter fans so it was obvious that for our daughter’s first Halloween, we’ll dress her up as a character from the series. But what would it be? Most character’s will need a wand, but my daughter’s still a baby and she’ll not hold a wand for more than ten seconds. And so many other characters that require glasses or a mask or a wig were ruled out (and therefore out went the window my favorite – Snape). And then we got this idea of dressing her up as Hedwig. I saw a homemade bird costume and another costume of an owl and with few changes here and there I knew I can make an owl costume myself.

So the first thing I did was search for an old black t-shirt. That formed the base of the costume.

The next step is to make feathers. I started by cutting a pattern on a thick paper. And then I cut colorful felt pieces from that pattern.
I stuck to just two pastel shades – white and camel. Number of feather pieces will depend on the size of the t-shirt (and thus size of the person who will wear this costume). In this case, I used around 35.
After that begin to line up the feathers in a row. I forgot to take a pic right at the starting but the following should give you a clue.
I don’t have a sewing machine so I hand sew them. Another easy way will be to use a fabric glue. Just keep making rows and sew them up. Do keep the color combination in mind.
Need to be extra careful as you reach the neck of the t-shirt (because of the circular shape). I pinned the feathers around the neck before sewing them so that I know exactly what I am putting where and how.

The next thing was to make a headgear to go along. I found this really simple fleece hat tutorial and accordingly made a fleece hat. The only difference was that because I was hand sewing and not with a machine, I decided to use blanket stitch for sewing the two parts together.

And then I just pasted owl’s eyes and beak (made out of felt) over the hat.

Supplies Used: Black-colored tee, felt pieces, fleece piece, needle and thread (or fabric glue)

P.S. The costume doesn’t exactly look like Hedwig but it comes pretty close. Right?
