Dreamcatcher Necklace DIY

Dreamcatcher Necklace DIY

All those of you who love wearing handmade jewelry, this one’s for you.

Last summers I got obsessed with dreamcatchers; though I don’t really remember how my fascination started. Maybe it was their intricate pattern, or their hanging feathers or their alluring history. (You can read the history of dreamcatchers here.)I must have tried my hands to make at least half a dozen of them.

Look at this and tell me if it isn’t one of the prettiest things you’ve ever seen –

Dreamcatchers are usually used or made as an item of home décor. However, one can use them in a variety of ways. I decided to make couple of necklaces with them and here how it went.

Things You Would Need

1 keychain ring or any other ring/hoop of around 4-7 cm (you can even use a bangle)

Yarn

Thread

Needle (if required)

Feathers

Beads/ buttons/ sequins/ similar random things

How To Go About It

Take the yarn. Tie a knot with it on the hoop you are using. Now wrap the yarn around the hoop. Once done secure with a double knot.

Now for the web of the dreamcatcher – take the thread and tie its one end to the frame of the hoop. Now loop it around your hoop as per this video. The presenter in the video is making an octagonal weave pattern. As we are using a smaller hoop, it would be best to make a pentagonal weave pattern. For pentagonal weave pattern, start by marking 5 points (instead of 8 for the octagonal pattern). However, if you feel that you are up for it, go ahead and make 8-pointed pattern!

The rest of the steps would remain the same.

In the video, the presenter is working with a bigger hoop. However, as we are working with a smaller hoop, we would be able to make the only 4-5 rows of the dreamcatcher ‘web.’

Remember to keep the thread taut all the while you weave. If you are finding weaving the thread hard, try using a needle along with it.

As you come towards the center of the dreamcatcher, you can add beads or sequins to the dreamcatcher. Secure the center well.

Cut a couple of 3-inch pieces from the yarn. Pass them through the hoop frame and secure them there with a double knot. Tie them close to each other. On these hanging strings of yarn, you can tie or glue on feathers, beads, buttons or anything of your choice. Make the necklace your own by adding things that you like. For example, Little B likes rainbows so I knotted in colorful buttons in the yarn to make a kind of rainbow.

Cut another piece from the yarn of the length you want your necklace to be (or if you can’t seem to decide, around 2 feet in length). Tie it on the end of the hoop opposite to where you have secured hanging yarn strings. Wear the necklace around your neck!

The weaving technique of dreamcatcher is a little complicated, but nothing to get disheartened about. With just a bit of practice, you should be able to get a hang of it.

You can use the same technique to weave a bigger hoop and hang that one over your bed!
